During the summer, if conditions are really dry, earthworms will bury deeper into the ground, produce a lot of mucus and aestivate in a coiled position.
Aestivation is also known as ‘summer sleep’ which is when the animal’s activity becomes dormant until the conditions are right again. This is like a sort of hibernation state, but instead of it being in the winter, it is in the summer!
