How long do the beneficial microbes survive in the castings?

Hi there. Ive been looking for info regarding viability of castings after a time without worm activity. My bins were terribly neglected this past winter while i was away. Came home to find the commercial three tier bin full of beautifully composted material and all the worms gone. One of my homemade bins was also void of worms. Does anyone know how long the beneficial microbes survive in the castings? I made batch of tea this week but not sure if using these castings is worth the effort. Is there a way to "test" castings? Thanks for any feedback, Lori

Ciao Lori – All of your worms are gone?  What a pity!  It wouldn't surprise me if there are some still in there – and perhaps some cocoons too.

As for the quality of the vermicompost you've got, unless it has completely dried out, I'm sure there are still plenty of microbes in there.  The jury is still out on just how beneficial these microbes are.  Even without the beneficence of the friendly bacteria, your vermicompost will still be an excellent soil amendment, providing a source of slowly released plant nutrients and helping with both water retention and soil structure.   The only way to 'test' your vermicompost is by the good old empirical approach:  go ahead and use them!  They certainly won't hurt your plants.

Best of luck to you!  Please let the forum know how your aged vermicompost works out.
