Hi I am hoping to set up a few large flow through bins, I was wondering if a 3 cubic yard bin would house as many worms and produce as much castings as 3 separate  1 cubic yard bins, sounds silly now it is written down, but would it be that environment and temperatures would be easier to keep consistent in a larger area? or would the differance be miniscule. Would appreciate any input.

Thanks Scruff

Dear Scruff – I think the general consensus is that the larger worm bin is probably an easier environment to control – and there is only one of them.  That being said, that's fine if you have the worms and enough food and bedding to keep them happy.  A cubic yard (for the scale I do) is quite large and it would not be difficult to control that environment.  Especially if you are just getting started. You may wish to start with a one cubic yard system and use a second one to transfer your worms into, as the first fills up.  I have a two bin system and when the first one gets quite full, I scoop off the top, worm-rich layer and use that as the start for my second bin.  Normally I need to repeat this several times to get the majority of the worms.  With the remainder of the finished compost in the first bin, I pass that through a screen and store that in smaller Rubbermaid bins, until use.  The first bin then becomes available as the second one fills up.
